Review

The Red Hot Chili Peppers released a making of Blood Sugar Sex Magik documentary called Funky Monks. The project was filmed by Gavin Bowden and director Gus Van Zant. Funky Monks includes live recording session performances from the album. The band decided to record in a large mansion-style house instead of the typical recording studio to avoid the "sterilicity" and anal vibes. Anthony Kedis claims that it was the first place the Beatles took LSD and where "Hendrix had sex with David Frost." Funky Monks includes some amazing clips of studio jamming and experimentation from the band's most important album. It is straightforward and simple: watching some of the making of their album and describing some of the subtext and motivations behind the lyrics to songs including "Suck My Kiss," "Breaking the Girl," "Under the Bridge," and others. If it had more of a narrative voice (documentary style), instead of just letting the camera roll (or relying on the band to explain what was going on), and included the actual finished music videos and live performances (from Lollapalooza, etc.) this could have been an amazing capsule in time. As it is, Funky Monks is simply an inessential, fun diversion. ~ JT Griffith
