The great flutist Ali Ryerson is the main solo star of this trio outing with pianist Steve Rudolph and bassist Steve Varner. Ryerson displays very attractive tones on flute and alto flute, and her melodic improvising perfectly fits the songs. Pianist Rudolph contributed three originals and he and bassist Steve Varner work very well together in this tasteful trio. The music is straight-ahead, lyrical, and lightly swinging at every tempo. This release from the tiny label Pa-Ct is well worth searching for, as is every Ryerson recording. ~ Scott Yanow
