Description

Christian Controversy in Alexandria is an in-depth study of Clement of Alexandria's polemic against Basilides, Valentinus, and their followers. The book contains a fresh translation and interpretation of Clement's citations from the Basilideans and Valentinians and his criticism of their teachings on topics ranging from the creation of the world to the life of the Savior and the church. The author also shows how Clement borrows the ideas of his opponents in order to redefine them in the interests of Catholic orthodoxy.

Review:
"The masterful interweaving and untangling of theological issues provides a window onto an especially interesting period in Western history. Many of these issues, as Procter points out in his conclusions, foreshadow debates and schisms centuries later in Christianity. Procter is 100% faithful to each øexamined! text and never wavers in the integrity of his approach." (Dr. Kathleen Jenks)
"øThis book! is an excellent study of the Greek text of Clement, and it makes a fine contribution to the study of the relationship between Clement and the Gnostic opponents, the Basilideans and Valentinians. Scholars interested in these questions øas well as! persons with a general interest in early Christian doctrine and church history will find it useful." (Birger Pearson, Professor Emeritus, University of California at Santa Barbara)
"Students interested in Gnosticism and early Church history and doctrine will find this a readable and useful introductory volume." (Ruth Majercik, Religious Studies Review)
"According to this careful study by Procter, Clement's teachings are shown to be a polemic to the docetism of the Basilideans and the Valentinians... Recommended." (The Reader's Review)
